How Often Should You Get Your House Cleaned?

Weekly, fortnightly or monthly, how to choose a house cleaning frequency based on household size and pets, and why the wrong interval wastes money.

Fortnightly suits most households. Weekly suits families, share houses and anyone with pets. Monthly rarely works as well as people hope, and it is worth understanding why before choosing it on price.

Why monthly usually disappoints

Bathrooms and kitchens do not hold for four weeks. By week three a bathroom needs more than a maintenance clean, so the cleaner arrives to a job that is halfway to a deep clean but is scheduled and priced as a regular one.

The result is predictable: either they run over and it costs more, or they stay within the time and something gets skipped. Neither feels like value, and people usually conclude the cleaner is the problem when the interval was.

If budget is the constraint, fortnightly on a reduced scope beats monthly on full scope. Agree that bathrooms, kitchen and floors are done every visit and that bedrooms are done alternately. You keep the frequency where it matters and cut where it does not.

The first clean is different

Nearly every reputable cleaner charges more for the first visit, and they should. Regular cleaning maintains a standard; the first clean establishes one. Expect 1.5–2× a normal visit.

If a home has a couple of years of build-up, a proper deep clean first is usually cheaper than paying maintenance rates for catch-up work across five or six visits. A cleaner who tells you that is giving you good advice, not upselling.

Signs the interval is wrong

Too infrequent if you find yourself cleaning the bathroom between visits, if the cleaner regularly runs over, or if the house only feels right for two days afterwards.

Too frequent, genuinely possible, if rooms are visibly untouched between visits and you are paying to clean an already clean house. Drop bedrooms to alternate visits before dropping the frequency.

Getting the most out of it

Clear surfaces before the cleaner arrives. Not tidying to impress them, cleaning time spent moving your things is time not spent cleaning. Ten minutes of clearing buys you a noticeably better clean at the same price.

Then say what matters most to you, and be specific. "The kitchen and the ensuite are what I care about" is more useful than "everything", because it tells them where the time should go when the clock is tight.
